UK higher education is world-class – many of the top universities in the world are in the UK, including Cambridge, Oxford, LSE, Imperial and Durham. Over three quarters of research activity at UK universities is rated as world-leading or internationally excellent.
In England and Wales, most undergraduate degree programs take three years to complete; however, the ‘sandwich course’ is increasing in popularity, which lasts four years and involves one year in the workplace (normally in your third year). In Scotland, undergraduate courses are four years in length. Some professional degrees, including Medicine, Veterinary, Architecture, have longer programs that can be as long as five years. International students pay between £10,000 and £25,000 annually for lecture-based undergraduate degrees. However, an undergraduate medical degree can cost overseas students up to £38,000 per year. International students who study a full-time undergraduate or postgraduate degree course at a recognised university are allowed to work part-time during term for up to 20 hours a week and full-time during the holidays.
International Foundation:
The programme is designed for international students who want to apply for an undergraduate course but do not meet the English language or academic entry requirements. The International Foundation programme combines intensive English language preparation and academic study, while developing study skills and providing a unique cultural experience. Kaplan, Study Group, CEG and Navitas are the biggest International Foundation providers in the UK. The programme usually takes one academic year and usually starts in September or January.
For graduate or master’s programs they are generally shorter in length and undertaken after graduation of your undergraduate program. Master courses in the UK usually take 1 year to complete.
Pre Masters:
Pre-master’s courses are designed for applicants who are not eligible for direct entry to a postgraduate course. Students gain the subject-specific knowledge and skills required to undertake master’s-level studies in their chosen subject area. Progression to the intended master’s degree is usually guaranteed for students who successfully pass their pre-master’s programme at the required level. Usually a minimum IELTS score of 5.5 is required to be able to start pre-master’s. Courses range in length from ten weeks to twelve months and provide an essential grounding for successful postgraduate study.
Pre-Sessional:
Students who want to study an undergraduate or postgraduate degree are normally expected to have a certain IELTS score or to get the result of the IELTS exam after getting an offer from their university. Schools often require students to achieve IELTS scores of between 6.0 and 7.5 depending on the intended course.
Pre-sessional English language courses are designed as intensive English preparation for international students planning to study on a degree programme at university who wish to improve their language skills or for whom successful completion of a pre-sessional course is a condition of their degree offer. Their length may vary from four to 24 weeks, depending on the English level of the student and the university they will study at. It is usually taken in the summer before starting your degree course.
