Children in the UK have to attend primary and secondary education, which runs from about 5 years old until the student is 16 years old. At age 16, however, students have more freedom to choose how they study: they can attend a college to obtain a diploma or similar qualification; they can undertake an apprenticeship; or they can attend a sixth form to study a two-year A level programme.

Students specialise in three or four subjects at Advanced Level education, which are usually relevant to the degree subject they wish to study at university. At the end the first year, students take AS level examinations and they continue with three or four of these subjects in Year 2  and convert them into full A level qualifications at the end of the year. A Levels are recognised by all UK universities and by institutions worldwide. From the age of 17, international students can also choose to study one-year foundation programmes. These courses lead to private examinations that are an alternative to A levels.
